Guidelines for Adding Fragrance or Essential Oils to Skincare and Haircare Products
The amount of fragrance or essential oil to add to your skincare or haircare products depends on the fragrance potency, desired scent strength, and product volume. Generally, use 0.25 - 1.00% of the total product weight.
For precise amounts, consult a fragrance calculator or the recommended usage rate in the chart below. Excessive fragrance can cause skin irritation or affect the product's stability and texture, so start with a lower concentration and increase gradually.
Always conduct a skin patch test before extensive use to ensure the fragrance is not too strong or irritating. Adding fragrance may impact the product's consistency and performance. Adding fragrance to a product may change the color of the base product at the time of blending, or change slightly over time as the product ages.
Pravada LLC is not responsible for any errors or inconsistencies in the fragrancing process. We strongly recommend testing all fragrances and formulations in small batches to ensure compatibility and desired results before full production. Proper testing is essential to achieve optimal performance.
step 1
Gather
Gather your materials, including your product base, your chosen essential or fragrance oil, measuring tools like a dropper or graduated cylinder, mixing tools such as a stainless steel or glass bowl and a stirring rod or spoon, and clean and sterilized containers for the finished product.
Step 2
Calculate
Refer to the chart below to calculate the appropriate mixing amount. Adjust based on preference.
Please note: this chart serves as a guideline for additives. You are solely responsible for testing your products to ensure their compatibility and safety.
Step 3
Prepare
Ensure your workspace, hands, and tools are clean to avoid contamination, and work in a well-ventilated area.
Step 4
Measure
Pour the desired amount of product base into your mixing bowl. Using a dropper or pipette, measure the appropriate amount of essential or fragrance oil based on your calculations.
Step 5
Mix
Slowly add the essential or fragrance oil to the product base and mix well to ensure the oil is evenly distributed throughout the base, which may take a few minutes of continuous stirring.
Step 6
Test
Apply a small amount of the mixture to your skin to test for any allergic reactions or sensitivities, waiting 24 hours to check for any adverse reactions. Smell the mixture to ensure the fragrance is at the desired strength.
Step 7
Modify
Ensure the consistency of your product hasn't changed, and if it has, adjust the ratio or mix more thoroughly. If the scent is too strong or too weak, adjust accordingly by adding more base or a few more drops of oil, always staying within safe limits.
Step 8
Package
Carefully transfer the finished product into your clean, sterilized containers and ensure all containers are sealed properly to prevent contamination and preserve the fragrance. Store the products in a cool, dark place to maintain their shelf life and potency.
Step 9
Monitor
Enjoy your newly customized product. Keep an eye on any changes in the product over time, such as scent fading or separation, to simply help you adjust future batches.
Special Considerations for Different Bases
Fragrance oils are typically oil-soluble and may not mix easily with water-based products.
To ensure proper blending, you’ll need a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 20 or 80. These help disperse the fragrance oil evenly throughout the base.
Use a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 solubilizer to fragrance oil, depending on the product.
These products are more forgiving and blend well with fragrance oils. Simply mix gently to ensure even dispersion.
Surfactants are sensitive to disruption. Adding too much fragrance or mixing too aggressively can cause separation or excessive foaming.
Add fragrance in small increments and stir slowly.
Products like body oils and oil serums are ideal for fragrance oils as they blend seamlessly without the need for solubilizers.
